I know this isn't FaceBook or YouTube but a reputation / "like" system is a good idea because it will encourage forum members to be more active and more helpful.

This sounds like a Bout Evolution idea.
People would just argue, "haha you noob got no reputation you cant help me or tell me anything".
A lot people, as you hawk for example and also others, are helping also voluntarily, therefore this isn't needed.
And if you think like this "I help alot but don't get anything for that, how about suggesting a rep. system".
Well its not like this, people and also we staff members are talking a lot about other people for example about who should get a chance as staff member and all.

I got the idea because a lot of forums I'm on use the "Thanks" , "rep" systems and I tough it would be a fun idea. :-\
