she got banished to the moon by her sister, they were both responsible for bringing day and night, the little sister (luna, the moon one) was upset that everyone slept through her night instead of playing in it like they did in celestia's sun (the rainbow haired one) so luna refused to put the moon down and celestia had to banish her to the moon
