It's to show what the world is coming too. There is no polar bear casually walking around London. Our trash output is increasing rapidly and we are doing little recycling in order to compensate, hence the pollution in nearly every scene. Our world is pitiful in all reality if you really think about it.

They're always going to be people out there who are willing to help(or small groups).
