Look at the color differences around the planet; the shadow would be behind the image because the light is at 'full blast' directly at the front of the image.
There's also the simple logic that a round spherical shadow doesn't just somehow create a line shadow to perfect cut off the ring like that.
Also..shadows don't erase things turning them permanently black, however since this is space it's only possible, but likely behind it can be so little light because of the sun being in only one direction of the planet, thus creating the illusion of it being gone.
End result: the ring was deleted from the image via paint/gimp/photoshop or it wasn't on the image at all when the image was created.
it's entirely possible it's a computer generated image
