Real life scenarios:

#1: Happily doing maths homework with pen when suddenly I go get a drink and put the pen down. Vanishes never to be seen again.

#2: Drop pen or its lid when working at my desk. Floorspace is reasonably clear. Vanishes never to be seen again.

#3: Drop 2nd backup pen at the same desk. Rolls over to unreachable place. Commonly the amazon rainforest where it will never be seen again.
