Actually he is right.  We only Allow alpha numeric and space in the login names.  If you would like me to change your account name so you can login, please send me a pm with the following:

new account name:
current password:

Nope, its so we can change the account name.  The password encryption goes like this:

SHA1(tolower(username)+password+random salt)

Since the username is encrypted into the password, changing the username will render the account useless unless we change the password aswell.

Using the admin panel an administrator can change the username using smf functions, rehashing the salt automatically.

When you change the users username, it randomly generates a new password then emails the user the new password.  But, if the user does not check his or her email, they will not know the new password.  Which is why I ask for their password, so I am sure they will be able to login to the new name.
