What platform?, also i treated myself to the season pass
! So yeah, most of the missions are quite basic and easy to follow, and the concept of the storyline does follow on from borderlands, so if you haven't played the first try brief yourself about the storyline of the first one. Also, if not don't worry i'm sure you'll catch along.
Make sure to collect nearby everyting < everything you can find, make sure to scavenge as if your playing alone you may find your ammo will get really decreased and there is a chance you may find weapons

If you get stuck on a part which is too hard try to back track yourself as enemies will respawn this is good because they will drop loot, money, ammo, and also give you xp to help you gain levels. As for the characters i'm not going to suggest a main type of character to use as everyone likes each one different. I mean my favourite at first was Zero, then it went to the Soldier, and then to the MechroMancer (DLC), and then to the Siren. The siren is quite helpful and is good one to use as she can revive other players with an ability down the skill tree
. If playing alone i think i would recommend the Soldier at first (If you haven't played before).
Try not to keep open games if you are playing with an online lobby, as many high-levels will join your game and in my opinion this ruins the gaming experience as it will just rush through, and be simple and easy with no challenge at all. Try to avoid black items, as these are modded/hacked items in the game so if someone happens to drop one just leave it.
Apart from that it's mostly just going through in your own time, and enjoying the game and playing it for yourself
