Step 1: Once you connected to the network (wireless or wired) change your DNS. Chances are the company/school is using a DNS that routes all traffic to it and they have an account through that DNS with variable settings that allow them to block a lot of websites based on what the site provides the DNS when you search for it.
- Open Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center
- Select "Change Adapter Settings" on the left hand side; this brings up active connection/adapters
- Right click your current connection to the internet and select "Properties"
- Left click on "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then click "Properties"
- At the bottom, select "Use the following DNS server addresses" and input 8.8.8.8 (this is Google's free and fast DNS) to the "Preferred DNS server" location.
- Click all the OK and Apply buttons until you are back to the connection/adapters and then close the Control Panel pages.
Step 2: Now that your DNS is changed, you can view any webpage you want and the network wont be able to block you and thusly you dont get reported to a log for IT for violations. From here we will need to download two programs: Your-Freedom and SocksCap. This step will discuss downloading and installation/setup of Your-Freedom.
- Visit
www.your-freedom.net, register and verify your account, then download the client that is up to date and for your OS.
- When the download is complete, find the applications .exe file where you saved it, and right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator".
- Follow the basic installation instructions until it is fully installed (nothing really to mess up here).
- When the program is installed, right click the icon on your desktop and select "Run as Administrator". In the upper right corner select the "About" tab and verify that the version you are running is: 20130315-01
- Select the "Status" tab and the click "Configure"
- Select the "Server Connection" tab and you can do one of two things: Click "Wizard" and find a sever you want to connect to (once it finds a list, gold coins are premium servers) or use the following information:
- Address: ems15.your-freedom.de
- Port 443
- Connection mode: HTTPS
- Tweaks: None
- In the options section, dont change anything but make sure the following are selected:
- Recconect after server shutdown
- SOCKS4/5 DNS lookups on server
- Enable encryption
- Enable re-keying
- Select the "Account Information" tab and input your information
- Click "Save and Exit"
- Select the "Ports" tab and select the following:
- SOCKS 4/5
- Web Proxy
- Leave the program up and running but just minimize it for now.
Step 3: Now we need to download and install/setup the second program.
- Type sockscap.soft32.com into your address bar and it will bring you to the download page.
- Click "Download Now" and follow the manager; this download produces a file called "sockscap_setup", run this file and it will produce a zip file called sockscap; unzip the file and run the .exe called "sockscap_setup". Some extra things may try to install but follow the manager to make sure you do a "Custom" install if asked so you can avoid them.
- Once installed, right click the icon on your desktop and select "Run as Administrator"
- Select File > Settings; make sure it opens on a tab called "SOCKS Settings"
- Under the "Server" section, type "localhost" without quotes in the section called "SOCKS Server" and make sure the port is 1080.
- Select "SOCKS Version 5" and then don't edit the settings below but make sure "Resolve all names locally" is selected.
- Click OK
- Click "New" and then type "World of Wacraft" in the "Profile Name" section.
- Click "Browse" and navigate to your World of Warcraft directory and find the file labled "Wow.exe" and click "Open"; it is usually in C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Wow.exe
- Click OK
Step 4: Now that we have both programs installed, it is time to run them and make sure that everything is okay. Again, you are going to be running a VNP that is more than likely going to be very far away but still stable and secure, so upon logging into the game, be prepared to have to change your password so have your authenticator nearby if you have one.
- Unminimize Your-Freedom and make sure you are on the "Status" tab; select "Start Connection"
- Select the "Messages" tab and scroll through the notes, if there is not red warnings you are connected without issues.
- Close the Your-Freedom window (it is running in the background and can be opened by right clicking the icon in the bottom right of your screen).
- Bring up the SocksCap Control window and click on "World of Warcraft"; select "Run".
- NOTE: It may take a mintue but the game will open.
Congratulations! You are playing at work or at school on a blocked network on a computer you have administrative rights for! Yay you!
