it can drop when the mob gets pushed, it relies on pure luck, if the box was gonna drop towards the platform it fell from then it would explode onto the platform, but if it wasn't, it either just does nothing or just makes the sound effect.

This is not true; the chances of a certain box don't change depending on whether you pushed or killed.
