I attempted to follow a tutorial..but I ignored most of it as it was annoying meh :)

It's alright but the c4d or whatever stands out too much.
The effects on the text are pretty bad (trust me, bevel and emboss aren't the way to go)
Overall, for a beginner, I'd say 6/10.

I haven't got onto the text bit of the tutorials yet :P

Just use a clipping mask over the text. It's the easiest way to achieve nice looking text at your level.

Clipping mask (for ps) =

Dupe image
Place text layer under dupe
Alt click between layers
Done.

What are you using? PS?
