I attempted to follow a tutorial..but I ignored most of it as it was annoying meh

It's alright but the c4d or whatever stands out too much.
The effects on the text are pretty bad (trust me, bevel and emboss aren't the way to go)
Overall, for a beginner, I'd say 6/10.

there arnt any really so advice and opinion is all u'll get

Just use a clipping mask over the text. It's the easiest way to achieve nice looking text at your level.

Clipping mask (for ps) =

Dupe image
Place text layer under dupe
Alt click between layers
Done.
