sometime it'll make the screen flash on and off really quickly and then the images or the videos and advertising stuff with show a "!" but the screen stops flashing after that.

make sure you are logged in.

Click on the big green button at top saying "Game Content" and then click on "Marketplace", the marketplace in game doesn't work.
